It is in the context of the fight against cancer that the European Commission, in December 2021, validated a report by the BECA (the special commission on the fight against cancer). This report stated that there is no level of alcohol consumption that is safe.

The OIV met with the WHO to reaffirm the place of wine in a healthy lifestyle. Indeed, at the global level too, the WHO will have to position itself on this issue in the future.

On February 16, to the relief of the wine industry, the European Parliament amended the report and renounced imposing “health warning labeling” on wines and alcoholic beverages. The European Parliament thus makes a difference between alcohol abuse and responsible wine consumption.
